Urban Hurdles: How Can Poverty Be Alleviated In Places Rich with Opportunities?

Chicago, IL
November 2, 2023
6-8pm CDT

How can we alleviate poverty in urban areas? Is there a role for government? If so, what is it? Join Young Voices, the Illinois Policy Institute, and the Center for New Liberalism at Lou Malnati’s Gold Coast Pizzeria on November 2 at 6:00 pm for a dialogue between Josh Bandoch and Colin Mortimer on the root causes of poverty and what economic and social policies can help reduce it.

Josh Bandoch is the Head of Policy at the Illinois Policy Institute. His work has appeared in popular outlets like National Review, The Washington Examiner, The Washington Times, and Discourse, as well as peer-reviewed journals like Political Studies. He is the author of The Politics of Place: Montesquieu, Particularism, and the Pursuit of Liberty (University of Rochester Press, 2017), which has received numerous positive reviews. He’s currently completing a book on persuasion and developing strategies to advocate for policies that expand freedom and prosperity.

Colin Mortimer is the Director of the Center for New Liberalism, a project of New Democracy. We are a center-left grassroots organization that strives to create a movement around pragmatic liberal values in the age of populism. As Director, the Center for New Liberalism has developed a network of tens of thousands of individuals around the world advocating for issues such as economic innovation, policies that promote abundance in housing, education, employment, healthcare, and more, making responsible public investments in science, technology, and infrastructure, investing in the skills and career prospects of Americans from all economic backgrounds, giving Americans the tools for economic mobility, spurring a clean energy transition that creates good jobs for U.S. workers and modernizing education and global interconnectedness through trade and immigration.

Drinks and refreshments will be provided.
